Why Russian birch still beats the alternatives

We've stocked Russian birch plywood continuously for twelve years. The reasons haven't changed much — multi-ply consistency, tight BB/CP grading, and a mill network that ships year-round. A short note on what to look for and what to avoid.

Birch plywood is one of those products where the cheap version and the good version look almost identical on a pallet. The cheap one sands fine, takes a finish, and looks the part for the first six months. The good one stays flat, keeps its edge, and doesn't delaminate when someone spills coffee on the table.

Russian birch from the Sverdlovsk and Vologda mills we source from has three characteristics that justify the price differential:

  • Multi-ply core. 18mm BB/CP Russian birch is 13 plies. The cheap Asian alternative is 7-9 plies with thicker face veneers. More plies mean better screw-holding and less telegraphing through the face.
  • Consistent grading. BB/CP means one face is BB (near-perfect, minimal knots) and the other is CP (small knots and patches). The mill stamps the actual sheet, not the pallet.
  • Year-round availability. Our largest SKU (CW-PLY-BIR18) ships on a six-week rolling schedule. We never run out.

What to avoid:

  • Birch-faced poplar core. The face is birch, the inside is poplar. It weighs less, costs less, and splits under load. Ask for a cross-section photo before you order.
  • BB/BB at BB/CP prices. If a supplier quotes BB/BB below the market rate for BB/CP, it's likely BB/CP downgraded to BB on the invoice and you'll only discover it on receipt.
  • Chinese 'birch'. There's no commercial birch plantation in China; any birch-plywood labelled as such is either relabelled poplar or transhipped from Russia.

The honest answer is that for most jobs Russian birch is overkill — poplar plywood or even MDF is fine. But when you need screw-holding, flatness, and a finish that won't surprise you, it's still the board we reach for.

We keep birch BB/CP 18mm in stock year-round at our Riyadh yard. Cut-to-size and edge-banded in-house. Send a cut list to info@cherrywood.com.sa for a quote.
